Cincinnato Baruzzi (Imola, Bologna, 1796 - Bologna, 1878)
Apollo, 1825
white marble; inv. S 25
provenance: Bequest of Cincinnato Baruzzi, 1878
The marble statue of Apollo, placed on a cylindrical Neoclassical base
adorned with a wreath of flowers, is a copy of the Apollo by Antonio
Canova, made in 1797 for the Frenchman Juliot.
This copy carved in 1825 by Baruzzi, Canova's favorite pupil and
collaborator, was acquired by the city as part of the sculptor's
bequest.
Apollo is portrayed as a naked youth, perfectly formed and animated by
a natural, elegant stance. His long curling hair is pulled back and he
holds his bow in his left hand. His quiver hangs from the tree trunk
that he leans against, around which a serpent is entwined.
