These three landscapes have been associated with the artist Antonio Francesco Peruzzini, coming from Ancona and guest of the noble Ranuzzi family in Bologna from 1682 to 1686. Peruzzini produced about fifteen landscape paintings for the Ranuzzi family and the pieces in this collection may well have come from that series. It is difficult to find direct parallels with other works by Peruzzini in part because many of the ones dating from this period are missing. Nonetheless, many elements of these canvasses recall his artistic language; including the gloomy and imaginary landscapes that glimmer with vivid lights and the attention paid to naturalistic details – such as tree branches and clouds.
