Lodovico Carracci, Circle of
The Annunciation, God the Father in Glory, and Precious Blood of
Christ, 1600/1605 ca.
oil on wood and copper; inv. P 105
provenance: Church of San Leonardo
acquisition: on extended loan from Azienda Ospedaliero - Universitaria
di Bologna Policlinico S. Orsola - Malpighi, 1979
This panel presumably divided the church from the enclosure of the nuns
convent next to it.
The doors slid open along a copper track allowing the nuns to receive
communion.
This work has in the past been attributed to Ludovico Carracci, as it
shows some affinity with his style around 1600.
However, the pictorial fluidity, with which God the Father and the
announcing angel have been depicted, clearly shows the work of a
different artist, influenced also by Pietro Faccini.
For this reason, the panel should be attributed to another artist in
the Carracci's circle, recently identified with the young Mastelletta.
