Jacopo Robusti, known as il Tintoretto (Venice, 1518 - 1594)

Portrait of an Elderly Man, 1575 ca.
oil on canvas; inv. P 87
acquisition: Pelagio Palagi Collection, 1860

This work clearly dates from the artist’s later phase (ca. 1575). Tintoretto used the same staging in other portraits painted during the period, with an open window to the side of the sitter.
Here, both the landscape and the left part of the painting have been altered by restorations, indicating that the original landscape has been repainted.
We do not know the name of the sitter, who wears the toga of a Venetian senator.
Despite the poor state of conservation it is still possible to enjoy the fine execution of the subject's features.
