Angelo Maria Crivelli, known as il Crivellone, attr. (Milano, (?) - 1730 ca.)
Still Life with Peacock and Pheasants and
Still Life with Barnyard Fowl, early 18th century
oil on canvas; inv. P 139, P 137
provenance: Bequest of Pier Ignazio Rusconi, 1930
In the first painting, a peacock and pheasants gaze at an owl perched
on a tree. The second painting shows a noisy barnyard assembly of
roosters, turkeys and geese.
The lovely landscape setting, with its hazy tones, brings to mind the
work of Angelo Maria Crivelli, known as il Crivellone, a Milanese
artist whose workshop specialized in still lives of fish and game, as
well as in depicting poultry and bird cages.
His son Giovanni, known as il Crivellino, took over his father's style.
