Donato Creti (Cremona, 1671 - Bologna, 1749)

Young Girl Meditating, 1715/1721 ca.
oil on canvas; inv. P 34
provenance: Bequest of Marcantonio Collina Sbaraglia to the Senate, 1744

Since the first time it was shown in public (the exhibition of Bolognese Art of the 18th Century in 1935) this ovedoor painting has been considered one of Creti’s most refined creations.
It is one of the best preserved of the series, and is an important example of an 18th century Bolognese academic study, demonstrating in particular Creti's interest in sculpture. Originally these overdoor paintings were considered more as elements of interior decoration than as independent works of art.
