Domenico Schianteschi (Borgo San Sepolcro, Arezzo, (?) - Modena (?), 1759)
Prospective Painting with Figures, 1721
oil on canvas, inv. P 13
provenance: Palazzo Comunale (city hall), Gonfalonier’s
quarters
This painting and Fernando Bibiena’s Prospective Painting
with Banquet Scene (see no. 1. inv. P 1) are pendants.
In all probability, these two canvasses were presented as gifts to the
Bolognese government in 1772, as stated in the official acts of the
Accademia Clementina on the 23rd of February 1722: “...the
other painting presented to the illustrious Gonfalonier together with
the painting by Bibiena, is by Domenico Schianteschi of Parma, who
painted it on the occasion of his admission as an honorary member to
the Accademia Clementina...”.
Schianteschi, an aristocrat from San Sepolcro, was a page at the Court
of Parma and studied architecture with Ferdinando Bibiena. According to
contemporary sources, he dedicated himself with diligence to the genre
of perspective painting, in close adherence to Bibiena’s
teachings.
